Hiking

Favorites include hikes centered on the area’s plentiful and picturesque waterfalls. For directions to the area’s favorite falls, see Columbia Gorge Scenic Waterfalls. Favorites include the Multnomah Falls Hike, a moderate two-mile trail that climbs 700 feet along paved switchbacks that ultimately land you at the top of the state’s highest waterfall. Stop in to the Multnomah Falls Lodge at the base of the falls, a historic building dating back to 1925. Be sure to take a photo of the famed Benson Bridge, built in 1914. Elowah Falls is an extremely popular and beginner-friendly hike and can be combined with the Upper McCord Creek Falls Hike. This is a great choice for low effort that results in “wow” views at the end.

Winter or summer, locals love the Mt. Hood Adventure Park at Ski Bowl. In the warmer months, more than 20 activities will rev you up, including an alpine slide, zip lining, reverse bungee jumping, interpretive trails, batting cages, horseback riding, rock wall climbing and more. When the snow starts flying, come for skiing and boarding day or night, on what has been called the best terrain on the mountain. Snow tubing and Frosty’s Playland are big hits with the younger set.

Brewpubs & Vineyards

Off mountain, Mount Hood Oregon beckons with its plentiful wineries, brewpubs and orchards. Let life slow down a bit and visit one of these favorites:

Wy’east Wineyards: This is local favorite has many of its wines served in Hood River restaurants. Just 2,000 cases are produced here annually, making this a relatively small winery for the region – all of the grapes, except the Cabernet and Syrah varietals, are grown on the property.

The Gorge White House: Put this 1910 Dutch Colonial house/store on your itinerary for its huge collection of bottles from local wineries, including some from Maryhill, Quennet and Marchei. For a dollar per taste, you can sample local wine and beer at the counter in the back of the house. If the season is right, there is blueberry and flower picking in the orchard.

Double Mountain Brewery: There’s a reason locals stand in line to pair their Black Irish Dublin-style stout or Gypsy Stumper IPA with the house-favorite F.O.T.M. pizza, a spicy creation with roasted chicken, hot wing sauce from Portland’s Fire On the Mountain and bleu and mozzarella cheeses. This convivial brew pub in downtown Hood River has it all – proximity to the beauty and attractions of Mount Hood Oregon, tasty pub fare and incredible beers. For something new, try Off the Wagon, a Belgian barley wine that invites heady conversation with friends or a good book next to a roaring fire – there are hints of stone fruit, fig, dark honey, brandy and sherry.

Helicopter Tours

Now here’s a unique way to see the 11,239-foot summit of Mount Hood Oregon. Consider an exhilarating helicopter tour, from which you’ll have a bird’s eye view of the volcano, the Timberline Lodge, river canyons, the Skibowl and tucked-away lakes and alpine meadows you’ll never forget.
